The Catholic Women’s League in NSW can trace its origins back to 1913 when the Catholic Women’s Association was founded in Sydney.1 Our current membership is approximately 1650 and we are active in all eight dioceses throughout NSW.
Our organisation fosters the spiritual, cultural, intellectual and social development of women and promotes the role of lay women in the mission of the Church.

The inaugural meeting of the then Catholic Women’s Association (CWA) was held in April 1913. ‘According to the press report of this meeting, it was attended by over 100 women who enrolled as members.’ The CWA’s aim was to provide a forum where ‘Sydney’s Catholic women could meet and enjoy each other’s company.’
Delegates from CWLA-NSW Dioceses gathered at the recent State Council Meeting. Reports were presented by State Portfolio holders and Diocesan Presidents.
Future direction for CWLA-NSW Inc. was discussed as the issue of leadership and the ability to elect executive is becoming more difficult in some dioceses. Discussions lead to proposals for alternatives to leadership, which will be discussed further by Diocesan Presidents with their members. Feedback will be further addressed at the State Council Meeting in March 2016.
