As we begin the season of Advent, we are challenged to be “alert” and to “prepare”—this is a time for new beginnings, a time to take stock, to look at what we have done and what we failed to do, to be open to The Lord and what He wants of us and for us.

At this time of the year, we look back over 2011, a year of hardship and resilience, of prayerful love and support for various parts of our State. We thank all CWL members for their support both prayerfully and financially in response to the natural disasters that affected us in the early months of the year. We realise that Queensland was not the only State affected and sincerely thank the members in other States for their support even when they were in need themselves. We had them in our prayers too.

We enjoyed the ‘coming together’ of CWL members from all over Australia in Melbourne during those few days in September. It was a time of meeting, rejoicing, and of fellowship and hope for the future.  It was a time to renew friendships and forge new beginnings. The enthusiasm generated by the various speakers and liturgies must continue.

Our State Conference will be held in Brisbane in September 2012, with preparations well under way. We hope it will be well attended and bring the members together in celebration for the gifts that are bestowed when “two or more are gathered in my name”.

The last two Branch AGM’s, in the Brisbane Archdiocese were held in November and well as the Memorial Mass for members who have gone on to their eternal reward in the past twelve months. We thank Father Bryan Roe for celebrating the Mass and his wonderful homily and friendliness.

The Townsville Diocesan Council Meeting and Annual General Meeting were held in early November. These were hosted by the Ayr Branch. It was a pleasure to be with them as they celebrated with prayer and thanksgiving for the successes of the past year and hope for the year ahead. Jean Tanzer OAM, National President Elect, resigned as WUCWO Liaison Officer for the Townsville Diocese. We wish Jean and her team God’s blessings for the next two years as they represent us all in the Catholic Women’s League throughout Australia. The Installation Mass for the National Team for 2012/2013 will be held in the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Townsville on Sunday 12th February 2012.

Chinchilla Branch in the Toowoomba Diocese farewelled Sr Martina Joyce in November. She has been a member of CWL and the WUCWO Liaison Officer for the Diocese for many years. Sr Martina has ministered to the parishioners there for twenty years but will now move back to Brisbane.

We are saddened that two branches in the Brisbane Archdiocese will close at the end of the year and a Townsville branch closed recently. Age and illness are often the usual reasons for these closures. Hopefully, these women will continue to work in their parishes for ‘The Honour and Glory of God’ even though their CWL membership has ceased.

As we gather for Christmas parties with fellow members and friends, let us always be mindful of the miracle of Christmas. May the love, joy and peace that the Christ Child brings be with you during this Holy Season and throughout the New Year.

Heather McIntyre
Queensland, State President
